TOOTH EXTRACTIONS
A tooth extraction may be necessary if a tooth is beyond repair. Common reasons include severe decay, advanced gum disease, blocked tooth development, orthodontic needs, or impacted wisdom teeth.
Procedure
After numbing the area, the dentist carefully removes the tooth. Some bleeding is normal initially, and gauze will be applied. Follow post-care instructions for optimal healing. Depending on your needs, your dentist can discuss tooth replacement options.
CLEANING / SCALING
Routine dental cleanings are essential for maintaining good oral health. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup, even in areas that are hard to reach with regular brushing and flossing. The frequency of your cleanings will depend on the health of your gums and the level of buildup.
Procedure
A cleaning generally lasts 30 minutes to an hour, starting with scaling to remove plaque and tartar, especially below the gum line. After scaling, your teeth are polished to remove remaining plaque and stains. Regular dental visits, paired with at-home care, support long-term gum and tooth health.
WHITE FILLINGS
White fillings, also known as tooth-colored fillings, are ideal for treating small to medium cavities. They blend naturally with the surrounding tooth structure, making them a good choice for visible areas. White fillings also preserve more of the natural tooth.
DENTAL EXAMS AND X-RAYS
Routine dental exams help maintain healthy teeth and gums, catching potential issues early to avoid more extensive treatments down the line. The Academy of General Dentistry recommends checkups every six months.
Procedure
The dentist visually examines your mouth with specialized tools, checking for signs of decay, gum disease, and oral cancer, and reviews your medical history. Diagnostic X-rays are also taken as needed to assess areas below the gum line. Bitewing X-rays are recommended every 12–24 months, and panoramic X-rays every 3–5 years.
ROOT CANAL THERAPY
Root canal therapy is used to save an infected tooth due to deep decay or a crack. This process removes the pulp and nerves from inside the tooth, cleans the area, and fills it to prevent further infection.
Signs a Root Canal May Be Needed
- Severe tooth pain when chewing
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold
- Discoloration of the tooth
- Swelling near the affected tooth
Procedure
An opening is made in the tooth to access and clean the pulp chamber and root canals. The area is then filled, and a permanent filling or crown is placed to protect the tooth. Root canals have a high success rate, though a crown is often recommended afterward for added strength.
